Creating a page

  • Ensure correct localisation by having the correct ”alternate” linked (start by creating a “dimensions” from a global page)

  • Follow content best practices, to ensure the page will perform well in the Google Rankings, and be informative for users

Localisation

Must know: Alternates & Dimensions

Good to know about localisation

How are local pages connected to global pages?

Every market is technically free to create their own page structure. However, for a consistent global appearance and technical reasons it is strongly recommended to follow the global structure as much as possible.

In order to build the website, Storyblok needs to understand how the local pages relate to global pages. This is achieved through linking those as “alternates”.

What are these Alternates and Dimensions?

These are different names for the same thing: A link from a local page to a global page. This link informs Storyblok which local page is the ‘translation’ of a given global page.

How do pages appear in the navigation?

The navigation is configured to show certain global pages and their children.

Local pages will automatically get included in the navigation, if they are correctly linked as alternates of these global pages.

To achieve this, new local pages should get created as a “dimension” of a global page (see below). Existing pages can also get linked as an “alternate” to the global page at any time (see below).

Creating pages

Create a new page, which has a respective page in global English

In most cases, local markets need to create a local version of an existing page.

  1. Open the global page in Storyblok

  2. Open the Dimensions menu on the top right

  3. Find your local market in the list

  4. Click Create clone

Then open the created page and edit it. It will automatically show up in the navigation.

You can use the translation plugin to automatically translate the content.

Linking an existing local page with a global page

Local page not showing up in the navigation?

Sometimes local pages have been created as standalone pages, even when they have an equivalent in global. In these cases it's important to link these pages to the global page.

  1. Open the local page in Storyblok

  2. Open the Entry Configuration menu (it's the 3rd icon on top in the middle)

  3. Scroll down to the Alternative version attribute

  4. Search for the respective global page by its name and select it
Note: As of writing, Storyblok has a bug in the search. It can take over 30 seconds for results to show up. We recommend using Storyblok v1, as the old Storyblok version is not affected by this bug.

  5. Publish the page

Create a new page, which does not have a global equivalent

If the page you want to create only exists in your market, there's nothing special to consider upon page creation.

  1. Go to the folder where the new page should be placed

  2. Click on Create new and then select Story

  3. Make sure to select the correct Content type, which in most cases should be Page

Pages with children (Folders and Root pages)

If you want to create multiple pages in a hierarchical structure, you have to create folders and then stories within.

Each folder should have one story, which is marked as Define as root for the folder.

Navigation

The page might not automatically show up in the navigation. In this case it needs to get added manually to the local navigation configuration.

We strongly recommend following the global page structure. In most cases, pages will automatically appear in the navigation this way. For example all pages under Expertise will automatically get listed.
